    Description

From my aviation collection I offer this 1870-1871 Siege of Paris bronze medal. During the Franco Prussian war Paris came under siege and was cut off from the rest of the country. This medal commemorates that event.
During the course of the siege pigeons were regularly taken out of Paris by Balloon with messages. Some brave citizens also took to balloon flight to escape the city. One pigeon taken out was released after landing and returned so Paris knew of the safe passage over the Prussian lines. The obverse of this 51mm bronze medal; a pigeon is released by the city goddess LUTETIA sitting on a cannon. A hot air balloon over her, with the city in the background. Legend below PARIS 1870-1971. The reverse has pigeons flying with one landing. Legend above and below COMMUNICATIONS AERIENNES. This medal is a post 1880 strike indicated by the edge marking bronze and horn of plenty.
