In 1860, with the Civil War looming on the horizon, Hiram Tuttle, a Republican, he entered politics and won the election for town clerk, giving the local Democratic Party its first loss in over 30 years.  In the post Civil War era Tuttle served in the N.H. House of Representatives (1873-1874), and from 1875 to 1877 he served on the military staff of Gov. Person Cheney with the rank of Colonel. In 1888 he was a Delegate to the Republican National Convention.
Now its 1890 and he's running for Governor.
HISTORY:   Charles H. Amsden was born in 1848, and was only a teenager during the Civil War.  As an adult he was a partner with his father and brother in the furniture manufacturing business. He was instrumental in organizing the NH Manufacturers' Mutual Fire Insurance Co, of which he was president.  He served in the N. H. State senate 1883-1884.  He represented NH at the centennial celebration of the inauguration of Washington as president in 1889 in NY.
Now it's 1890, and he's also running for Governor.
Only one can win.   It was a hotly-contested, three-way race that included a candidate of the Prohibition Party, Tuttle finished first. The Democratic nominee, Charles H. Amsden finished second, but Tuttle did not have a majority, which meant the election had to be decided by the New Hampshire General Court. The legislature chose Tuttle.
