Although he never earned a formal degree in landscape architecture, he worked for the City of Baton Rouge in the 1920s, at which time he planted City Park, and he served as the LSU landscaper from 1932 to 1970. He was also involved in the landscape design of Shadows on the Teche Plantation in New Iberia, Louisiana, and Edward McIlhenny's Avery Island. He designed the gardens behind LSU's Faculty Club and planted many of the crepe myrtle and live oak trees on the campus. He was an avocational artist, and served in both World War I and II.
