Description
For you to consider I offer a very rare original French silver medal. One side has the Montgolfier 1783 reverse by Gattaux on the first balloon flight of the Montgolfier brothers. A balloon and two emblematic female figures, one seated on a cloud, the other on a lion. Another lion at her feet and crossed keys as well. Around the upper portion are the words "ATTONITUS ORBIS TERRARUM" (The world astonished) and at the bottom "ITINERE PER AERA FELICITER TENTATO ANNO MDCCLXXXIII" (A journey through air felicitously attempted in the year 1783). The name of the artist, "GATTEAUX".

-- A circle formed by the necklace of the order of Saint Michel surrounding the archangel Michael with shield of France and sword, striking a blow to Satan being held down by Saint Michael's foot; inferno in the background, date below. Original die chip at the M of MICHAELIS . A very rare medal and the only one I ever saw and I bought it. I had heard of it but never had a chance until this one came along. See the scans.
